The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially announced former Minister of Transportation and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The decision means Amaechi will join former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the party’s presidential ticket as the ADC prepares for what could become one of the most closely watched elections in Nigeria’s recent political history.
Party Confirms Decision
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.
According to the party, the decision followed consultations involving party leaders, coalition partners, youth representatives, women groups and stakeholders from across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
The ADC said Amaechi’s selection was influenced by his performance during the party’s presidential primary process, where he reportedly emerged as runner-up and attracted significant support from members nationwide.
ADC Highlights Amaechi’s Political Experience
In explaining its choice, the party pointed to Amaechi’s extensive record in public service.
The former Rivers governor has served in both legislative and executive positions, including his tenure as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and two terms as governor.
He later joined the Federal Executive Council as Minister of Transportation, where he oversaw several transportation and railway projects during his time in office.
According to the ADC, Amaechi’s experience across multiple levels of government positions him as a strong complement to Atiku’s presidential bid.
Party Sees Strategic Value in Partnership
The ADC described the proposed Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a combination of experience, national reach and political influence.
Party leaders argued that Amaechi’s influence in the South-South region and other parts of Southern Nigeria could strengthen the ticket’s appeal ahead of the election.
The statement further noted that both politicians possess extensive experience in governance, administration and coalition-building, qualities the party believes are necessary to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
Focus on 2027 Campaign
The party maintained that the ticket offers Nigerians an alternative leadership option ahead of the next general election.
ADC officials also expressed confidence that the partnership would energize supporters and expand the party’s growing coalition across the country.
With political alignments already beginning to take shape ahead of 2027, the announcement is expected to generate significant discussion among political stakeholders and voters in the months ahead.
