Nigerians may spend more on household cooking as the price of liquefied petroleum gas, popularly known as cooking gas, has increased across the country.
The latest increase comes amid concerns over supply shortages raised by marketers in the sector.
The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers disclosed that the average price of cooking gas has risen to about N1,500 per kilogram in several locations, especially in Abuja.
The association explained that the product previously sold for around N1,200 per kilogram earlier in May 2026, showing an increase of about N300 within a short period.
According to the marketers, the sharp rise in price is worsening the financial pressure already facing many Nigerian households due to the high cost of living.
In a joint statement issued by the association’s leadership, marketers warned that the situation could become more difficult for consumers if urgent action is not taken.
“The citizens of Nigeria now buy cooking gas at a very high price of over N1,500 per kilogram,” the statement noted.
The group also expressed fears that continued price increases could lead to frustration among consumers and operators of gas stations nationwide.
Industry stakeholders said the increase has affected many families who rely on cooking gas for daily domestic use.
The development means Nigerians may now pay significantly higher amounts to refill cooking gas cylinders depending on their location and quantity purchased.
Marketers are calling on the Federal Government to address supply challenges and stabilise prices to prevent further hardship for citizens.
The latest increase adds to the growing concerns over inflation and rising energy costs across the country.
