French authorities have called on football supporters to celebrate responsibly as France prepares to face African champions Morocco in a highly anticipated FIFA World Cup quarter-final.
The appeal comes amid heightened security concerns following previous major football matches that resulted in isolated incidents of unrest.
Government Calls for Responsible Behaviour
France’s Sports Minister, Marina Ferrari, urged supporters to ensure the match remains a celebration of football rather than an occasion for disorder.
Speaking ahead of Thursday’s encounter, Ferrari appealed to fans across the country to act responsibly and respect public order before, during and after the game.
The French government has also made it clear that security agencies will respond firmly to any acts of violence or vandalism.
Security Tightened Across France
Authorities have announced increased security measures in several cities, with police expected to monitor public gathering points where fans are likely to watch or celebrate the match.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned that any misconduct would not be tolerated, stressing that law enforcement officers have been instructed to maintain public safety throughout the event.
The move follows previous high-profile football fixtures that required significant police intervention.
Match Carries Historical Significance
The quarter-final holds special significance because of the close historical and cultural ties between France and Morocco.
Although Morocco gained independence from France in 1956, the two countries continue to share strong social and cultural links.
France is home to a large Moroccan community, while several Moroccan international players were either born in France or developed through French football academies.
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi, meanwhile, plays club football for Paris Saint-Germain, one of France’s biggest football clubs.
Previous Encounters Remain Fresh
The two nations also met at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where France defeated Morocco in the semi-finals.
While celebrations following that encounter were largely peaceful, authorities remain cautious given the scale of public gatherings expected for another major World Cup meeting.
Officials hope supporters from both nations will focus on enjoying the occasion and celebrating the sport in a peaceful atmosphere.
