South African rapper, Nasty C, has praised Nigerian music star Wizkid for helping African music gain massive international recognition.
Speaking during a recent podcast interview, the rapper explained that Wizkid’s 2016 collaboration with Canadian superstar Drake on the hit song One Dance played a major role in opening global opportunities for African artists.
According to Nasty C, the success of the song changed how the international music industry viewed Afrobeats and African sounds.
“Wizkid and Drake’s collaboration on One Dance opened the door for African artists,” he said during the interview.
The rapper added that the global success of the record helped make Afrobeats more commercially attractive, leading many African musicians to embrace the genre.
He revealed that some rappers in Africa even switched from hip-hop to Afrobeats because of the financial opportunities and worldwide attention the genre started receiving after the hit collaboration.
“After the collaboration, African music received a huge boost. During some interviews I had in Nigeria and Ghana, hosts told me that some rappers were switching to Afrobeats because it became more lucrative,” Nasty C explained.
One Dance by Drake featured Wizkid and British singer Kyla. The song became a worldwide hit and later made history as the first song to reach one billion streams on Spotify.
The record blended Afrobeats, dancehall, and pop sounds, helping introduce millions of listeners around the world to African-inspired music.
Drake had previously acknowledged Wizkid’s major contribution to the song, with the Nigerian singer receiving credits as a performer, co-songwriter, and co-producer.
Over the years, Wizkid has remained one of the leading African artists with global influence, collaborating with several international stars and helping push Afrobeats to new audiences worldwide.
